Shade Taking Hints

1. THE RIGHT EYES. 50% of the male population are colorblind in some area of the color range. It would be good to have a female present to confirm the shade selection, as females are rarely colorblind.

2. THE FIRST THING. Take the shade before injection or prepping as the patients teeth will change as they dehydrate. If you miss taking the shade before prepping, have the patient return for shading after 24 hours. The teeth will have time to re hydrate and return to normal color.

3. PREP SHADE. If an all ceramic crown or veneer are to be placed, take a shade of the prepared teeth. Include this shade on the prescription. It is vital for the lab to make the right choice of materials to use.

4. LIGHT SOURCE. Turn the oral light off, don’t just point it away.

5. SHADE FRIENDLY AMBIENT COLORS. North mid day light is the ideal, but may not be practical. When possible take the shade in surrounding colors of blues, grays, or neutral white. The patient bib should be blue and cover any color influence from clothing.

6. CHAIR POSITION. Set the chair angle to position the patient at approximately 45 degrees, to make the best use of any natural light and your color corrected overhead florescent lighting.

7. NO SHADOWS. Have an assistant hold back the patients lips, with their hands or retractor, very close to the patients face, to avoid shadows on the teeth.

8. DISTANCE. The shade tab should be held, and the shade taken at arms length.

9. THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT. Value, if the value is correct and the hue and chroma are not, the restoration will stand a better chance of blending in the mouth. Value runs from super bright( A0,B0), to high value (A1,B1), To warm (A2,3,3.5,4), to sunny (B2,3,4), to pearl (D2,3), to low value (C1,2,3,4).

10.HUE AND CHROMA.

Hues are:

  • Red/brown (A shades)
  • Yellow (B shades)
  • Gray (C shades)
  • Red/Brown with Gray (D shades)

Chroma is: The intensity or Saturation of color.

11.Refresh. Your eyes will tire, stop and focus your eyes on something med blue to refresh your color perception.
